Emily Sheehan

Emily is an award winning playwright, screenwriter, podcaster and dramaturg.

Most recently her play Monument returned to the Red Stitch theatre for an encore season after a very successful and critically acclaimed premiere in 2023. Her play Frame Narrative will also premiere this March at the Old Fitz Theatre in Sydney.

In 2018 her play Hell’s Canyon opened at the Old 505 theatre in Sydney before travelling to the La Mama in Melbourne. Hell’s Canyon also toured regional Victoria and the ACT in 2021. Emily’s other plays include Daisy Moon Was Born This Way which was produced at the Q Theatre in Western Sydney and Versions of US which was produced by the Canberra Youth Theatre both in 2017.

Her plays have been developed through Melbourne Theatre Company Cybec, Red Stitch INK, Playwriting Australia National Play Festival and New Ghosts.

Emily’s playwriting awards include the Rodney Seaborn Playwrights’ Award (Winner), Melbourne Fringe Festival Award (Winner)and The Patrick White Playwrights' Award (Finalist) for Hell’s Canyon and Max Afford Playwrights' Award (Finalist), UK’s Theatre503 Playwriting Award (Longlist) and the Griffin Award (Longlist) for Monument.

Emily is also currently developing two screen projects.

Emily has completed attachments with The Bush Theatre (London), Traverse Theatre (Edinburgh) and Playwrights’ Studio Scotland and worked as a dramaturg for Theatre503 (London), Arts Centre Melbourne and the Victorian College of the Arts. She has also undertaken dramaturgy observations with the National Theatre of Scotland and Melbourne Theatre Company, and worked as a script reader for Playwriting Australia and Currency Press.

Emily currently hosts the Playwright’s Process Podcast, a monthly podcast about writing craft and the creative process, and teaches playwriting at the Victorian College of the Arts, University of Melbourne.
