Echo/Bonnier Signs Guardian Australia’s Bridie Jabour’s Debut Novel
Bonnier Publishing Australia’s Echo imprint has acquired world rights to Guardian Australia journalist, Bridie Jabour’s debut novel, The Way Things Should Be. Set in the lead up to a wedding in a country town, the book centres on four adult siblings coming together for the event, and explores themes such as what it means to be a millennial, the complex relationships between parents and adult children, what we expect and what life gives us, and how our relationships evolve with our siblings, friends, and ourselves. Commissioning Editor, Angela Meyer says, ‘The voice of this novel is so genuine and relatable and it beautifully captures, in microcosm, the expectations and disappointments faced by people our age, as well as more broadly appealing to absolutely anyone who infrequently ventures to their ‘hometown’ for a big event and experiences all the inevitable tensions of family relationships. The characters are so memorable. We’re delighted to be publishing The Way Things Should Be, and working with Bridie.’ The Way Things Should Be will publish in May 2018.
About Bridie Jabour
Bridie Jabour is a writer who has worked as a journalist for News Corp, Fairfax and Guardian Australia.
Bridie has written commentary on inequality, feminism and pop culture. She appears regularly on the ABC, Sky News, Triple J and ABC radio Sydney and is co-host of the podcast Behind the Lines.
Bridie is assistant news editor at Guardian Australia where she has reported on social affairs, politics and regional issues. She has worked in the Canberra press gallery and was a reporter for Brisbane Times after starting her career at the Gold Coast Bulletin in Queensland. She has been nominated for New South Wales and Queensland media awards for her coverage of the Lindt Cafe Siege and Queensland state politics.
She has hosted live shows for the Guardian and appeared on panels at various writers’ festivals as a moderator and contributor. The Way Things Should Be is her first novel.
