Writer Matthew Whittet Joins the Agency

Matthew is a writer, actor and dramaturg who has worked extensively in theatre, film and television for the last 26 years.

Most recently, Matthew has had two productions of his internationally successful play Seventeen showcased with the Melbourne Theatre Company, and Seymour Centre in Sydney. As a playwright, he has a written various works including children’s. He has twice been nominated at the AWGIE’s for Best Play for Young Audiences, with Girl Asleep (Windmill Theatre Company and Belvoir St Theatre) in 2015 and We Are the Mutable (Queensland Theatre) in 2022. Other plays of his include Kindness (National Institute of Dramatic Arts); Cinderella, Old Man, Silver (Belvoir St Theatre); Fugitive (Windmill Theatre Co and Adelaide Festival) and Big Bad Wolf (Melbourne Theatre Company and Windmill Theatre Co). In 2013, Matthew’s play School Dance (Windmill Theatre Co, Adelaide Festival and Sydney Theatre Company) was nominated for a Helpmann Award, in the industry category of Best New Australian Work.

In his screenwriting career, Matthew achieved multiple accolades for the feature adaptation of his play Girl Asleep, which was directed by Rosemary Myers, and produced by Windmill Theatre & Soft Tread Enterprises. The film premiered at the Adelaide Film Festival and in 2016 won The Age Critics Prize at MIFF, as well as the Grand Jury Prize and Futurewave Youth Jury Award at the Seattle International Film Festival. It was also nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay at the 2016 AACTA Awards. Matthew’s first television credits were landed in the hugely popular Netflix series Heartbreak High (Fremantle Media, 2022). He wrote episodes 2 and 7 of the show’s first season.
