Julia Patey

Julia Patey is a playwright, screenwriter and theatremaker, based in Sydney. 

She is currently developing her play The Knife for screen.

In 2020 The Knife was programmed for Griffin Theatre’s BATCH Festival before it was cancelled due to Covid 19. That same year The Knife was subsequently awarded screen development funding by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation as part of their Fresh Start Program. In 2019 the play had its Sydney debut at Bondi Feast. Julia was named the Tour Director of Sydney Theatre Company’s national tour of Black is the New White by Nakkiah Lui. The remount debuted at Black Swan State Theatre Company, in Perth, before playing at Melbourne Theatre Company and at State Theatre Company of South Australia.

In 2018, Julia directed Belvoir’s inaugural 25A production, Greater Sunrise by Zoe Hogan. A bilingual production, Julia’s worked closely with a translator to work dramaturgically in both English and Tetun. Julia also directed Dolores for SAM Productions in a site-specific production.

In 2017, Julia was awarded the Rose Byrne Female Arts Leader Scholarship for her proposal to establish a female artistic director mentorship program. Julia also worked closely with her mentor, Paige Rattray, as her Assistant Director on two mainstage productions: Scenes From A Marriage adapted by Joanna Murray Smith (Queensland Theatre) and Black is the New White by Nakkiah Lui (Sydney Theatre Company)

In 2016, Julia’s play Moonchild premiered at ATYP. Moonchild was the second production in her project, we make theatre, a theatre experiment with young artist Scarlett Waters. Julia’s debut work for we make theatre, Gonna Be, premiered at Bondi Feast in 2015.

Also in 2015 Julia’s monologue Sure was selected for commission by ATYP and Currency Press as a part of their Voices Project. It debuted at ATYP in January and was reproduced by ABC’s Radio National. Julia directed Cleansed in Blood at the Old Fitz that same year and was also commissioned by the City of Sydney to create a climate-change response: I'm Sorry We No Longer Sell Bath Bombs. She was also Assistant Director on A Town Named Warboy by Ross Mueller. Julia was awarded Australia Council ArtStart funding and travelled to the UK to investigate new writing models.

Julia graduated with a Bachelor of Communications (Theatre/Media) in 2013 (Charles Sturt University, Bathurst).
