Peter Duncan is a highly regarded and experienced screenwriter and director. His most recent work The Correspondent, a feature film for POP Family Entertainment, directed by Kriv Stenders and starring Richard Roxburgh, is set for release on the 17th of April 2025. His first feature, Children of the Revolution (starring Judy Davis, Sam Neill, Geoffrey Rush and F. Murray Abraham), received 9 AFI nominations, winning 3 awards, and 7 Film Critics Circle Award nominations, winning for Best Screenplay. The film also won Best Feature Film at the Canberra International Film Festival, 1996. Peter wrote, directed and co-produced A Little Bit of Soul (starring Geoffrey Rush and Frances O'Connor) which was nominated for 2 AFI Awards; and directed Passion, a film about the life of Percy Grainger (starring Barbara Hershey, Richard Roxburgh, and Emily Woof), which was nominated for 7 AFI Awards.
He wrote and directed Unfinished Sky – which received 10 AFI nominations (winning for Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Sound, Best Original Music Score, Best Actor, and Best Actress), 8 IF Awards nominations (winning for Best Director, Best Editing, Best Production Design, and Best Actress), 8 FCCA Award nominations (winning for Best Screenplay, Best Editing, Best Music Score, and Best Actor), and an AWGIE nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay.
Peter was a co-creator, writer, director, and producer of Rake (2010–2018), produced by Easy Tiger/Essential Media for the ABC. The series received critical acclaim, including 15 AACTA Award nominations (4 for Best Television Drama Series), a SPAA Award for Best Drama Television Production, and 4 Logie Award nominations for Most Outstanding Drama Series, Miniseries or Telemovie. Peter won the 2011 AWGIE Award for Television Series, the 2012 NSW Premier’s Literary Award for Scriptwriting, and a 2012 ADG Award nomination for Best Direction. He won the 2014 AWGIE Award, was nominated for the 2015 AACTA Award for Best Screenplay in Television and won the 2016 AACTA Award for Best Direction.
Peter also wrote the US pilot spin-off of Rake (2014) for Sony Pictures Television and Fox, starring Greg Kinnear, and was a series writer, creative consultant, executive producer and co-showrunner on the series. His telemovie credits include Valentine’s Day (nominated for the 2008 AFI for Best Telefeature, Miniseries or Short Run Series), and Hell Has Harbour Views, which won the 2005 AWGIE Award for Telemovie Adaptation.
In 2020, Peter’s series Operation Buffalo premiered on ABC to strong reviews. Peter was a producer and the sole writer for all six episodes, which received 10 AACTA nominations. Operation Buffalo was also the recipient of Best Comedy at the 2020 Berlin Television Festival. Peter is currently developing a number of projects for stage and television.
