Peter Houghton

Peter works as a writer, director and actor in theatre, film and television.

Most recently, Peter opened Underneath Ms Archer which he directed, co-wrote and performed with Louise Siversen at St Martins Theatre in June 2023. His writing for theatre includes The Pitch which premiered at La Mama and then enjoyed extended and return seasons at Malthouse Theatre, Black Swan and a national tour. His plays A Commercial Farce and The China Incident were also produced by Malthouse and have toured extensively. Peter was an affiliate playwright for the Melbourne Theatre Company who produced his play The Colours.

In 2018 Peter Directed Aiden Fidenessy’s The Architect for MTC and is set to direct his final play The Heartbreak Choir in 2021 at MTC. In 2016 Peter directed The Odd Couple for MTC, starring Shaun MiCallef and Francis Greenslade. Other directing credits include The Boy at the Edge of Everything, True Minds, Art & Soul, The Recruit and Hinterland for MTC, Svetlana In Slingbacks and God’s Last Acre for Playbox, Noises Off for Marriner Theatres, and A Hotel, Evening for Black Swan Theatre Company.  As an actor he has performed with Malthouse, STC, MTC, Melbourne Festival, Black Swan and in film and TV productions including Howzat – Kerry Packers War, Newstopia, The Eye of The Storm, Killing Time, Halifax, Metal Skin, Little Oberon among others.

Peter has received Victorian Green Room Awards for Best Actor, Best Director and Best New Australian Play as well as several nominations for his acting work. The Pitch was also Show of The Week in Edinburgh. Peter has just wrapped up directing the MTC production The Architect. He is also currently writing a feature film comedy and developing a television series.
