Director of Photography
Simon Ozolins is a multi-award-winning cinematographer. Most recently, he wrapped on the six-part drama series Ladies in Black, directed by Gracie Otto and produced by Bunya Entertainment for the ABC. Also in 2024, Simon continued his work on Fremantle and Netflix’s Heartbreak High, shooting Season Two with director Gracie Otto, following his work as set-up cinematographer on Season One, which earned him a 2022 AACTA nomination for Best Cinematography in Television.
His other recent television credits include the noir comedy mystery Deadloch (dir. Gracie Otto, Ben Chessell, Bec Cole) for Guesswork Television and Amazon Studios, where Simon shot key episodes. The series received a 2024 AACTA Award nomination for Best Narrative Comedy Series and a 2024 GLAAD Media Award nomination for Outstanding New Series. He was also Director of Photography on the four-part television drama The Unusual Suspects (dir. Natalie Bailey), starring Miranda Otto, for SBS and Aquarius Films; the series was released in 2021 to critical and audience acclaim and earned him a Gold ACS Award for Best Cinematography in a Serial TV and Comedy Series. Simon also shot the second series of The Other Guy (Stan/Aquarius Films), and Tomorrow, When the War Began (Ambience Entertainment), for which he won a Gold ACS Award.
In the film space, Simon shot the feature film Audrey (dir. Natalie Bailey) for Orange Entertainment, and One More Shot (dir. Nick Clifford) for Truce Films and Good Thing Productions. Simon won a Silver ACS Award for the feature film Crawlspace (dir. Justin Dix/ IFC Films, 2012). His short film credits include Skin (dir. Liselle Mei, 2015), The Wake (dir. Gemma Lee, 2009), Dugong (dir. Erin White, 2007) – which won a Silver ACS Award, screened at Sundance and received an AFI Award Nomination for Best Short Film – and 62 Sleeps (2004). In 2024 Simon was Second Unit Director of Photography on Peter Farrelly’s feature film Balls Up for Skydance Media and Amazon MGM Studios, and on the Robbie Williams biopic Better Man (dir. Michael Gracey) for Paramount Pictures and Footloose Productions.
Simon has also shot a number of documentaries, including the AFI Award-winning Inside the Firestorm (dir. Jacob Hickey/ ABC, 2010) and Immigration Nation (dir. Jacob Hickey/Ben Shackleford, 2011) for the ABC. He also shot the ABC satirical comedy At Home with Julia (dir. Erin White/ Quail Television, 2011). Simon’s commercial credits extend to hundreds of major brands both in Australia and internationally, and he has won several Gold ACS Awards for his commercial work. He has a significant reputation in the music video industry, having shot the award-winning Walking on a Dream for Empire of the Sun, which won the ARIA for Best Music Video of the Year, and Billy Thorpe’s Tangier, for which he received the National Golden Tripod Award.
