Critically Lauded 'The Nightingale' Takes Home the Special Jury Prize at 75th Venice Film Festival

After having its world premiere at the 75th Venice Film Festival last week, Jennifer Kent’s highly anticipated follow-up feature, The Nightingale, has received wide praise by international critics and audiences alike, with the festival awarding the film two awards: the special jury prize as well as the Marcello Mastroianni award for best new young performer going to star Baykali Ganambarr.

Critics have drawn attention to the films unflinching depiction of racism and violence against women, stating it is a challenging but hugely important film. Many have praised the craft and authenticity of the film, which was achieved with the help of Cameron’s clients, Costume Designer Margot Wilson and Production Designer Alex Holmes.

“This is violent, hard-graft auteur film-making,” says Variety’s Guy Lodge, “Jennifer Kent impressively follows up The Babadook with a historical revenge tale of shattering brutality and hard-earned grace”. His sentiment was shared by Indiewire’s Michael Nordine, “Acclaimed filmmakers often face the challenge of big expectations on their second features, but Kent joins the ranks of sophomore filmmakers whose new movies expand on their debuts in startlingly ambitious ways. She charts her own path in The Nightingale, a savage journey that might not have been worth the trip were its guide not so adept at navigating the darkness.”

While the Australian release date is yet to be announced by Transmission, you can be assured that this will come soon as the award wins immediately place The Nightingale firmly in the awards season race. Keep your eyes on our website for updates on the Australian release date.

 The Nightingale is coming soon.
